Project #1 Painted By:  Chalk It Up!

I found this tired little end table for $10. It was ivory in color, but very dirty and in need of some TLC.

First it needed a deep cleaning. The surface prep solution worked great. After it was dry I gave the top a light sand. The stain finish that was on there was chipping in some areas and so I got that off with the sandpaper.

I mixed the brown and black glaze into an espresso like colour. 1:1 mix.

And re glazed the top.
While the top was drying I very easily and quickly painted the body and legs of the table with Liberty. It’s a lovely mint. I painted quick thick and so only needed one coat.  Used only half a pot of a sample size.  One more layer of glaze to the top.

Once the paint was dry I put on a layer of top coat. I usually do this when I know I’m going to use the dark wax, so the dark wax doesn’t “soak in” quite as much.
A couple hours later I started with the dark wax.

I brushed it in quite heavy on the edges and anywhere there were imperfections to the wood. Wanting to enhance, not hide the different marks of the piece to really give it the “antique” look.
After letting the wax cure over night, I buffed it up with an old brown bag.
A new funky knob made it complete.

Project #2 Painted By: Twigs and Twine

This is a garage sale find, transformed! We found this old carousel horse at a garage sale with the brass pole and purple saddle.

We transformed the horse by painting with one coat of APC Limoges color.  Then we used the Dark Vintage Antiquing Wax over the top.

The shiny brass pole is gone forever! We used a mix of Copper and Pewter Mica powder, and sealed with Hard Coat.

Project #3 Painted By: Olde City Mercantile

I love when I find these because in my area they don’t come around often!

I painted this small display case using Backyard Pond. I sealed it with APC’s Clear and Dark Vintage Antiquing Wax.

Project #4 Painted By:  Thank You Dear Heart Vintage

My hubby and I save any old door we find to repurpose and create all sorts of pieces. When he pulled this door out, I decided not to paint it because I loved all the chippy original paint.

I used two old wood legs and hubby built me a table type shelf to create a Hall Tree. The shelf was new wood and the legs were old, cracked black wood. I painted them with Crushed Tea then crackled over with Limoges.

After I sealed with Top Coat, I used dark wax over all of the crackle. The match was perfect.

Added old wire hooks and a vintage door knob. LOVE!!

Project #5 Painted By:  Chalk It Up!

Found this little table at a garage sale for $5! It was a dark mahogany finish and the glass top was cracked.

After cleaning with the surface prep I quickly and easily painted this little table with some Nana’s cupboard. It went on easy and I used a foam brush for most of it.

Once it was dry I sealed it with the clear wax, but because the table didn’t have much depth, with just a flat surface, I decided to use the dark wax as well. So glad I did, it really added definition to the little table.

Once I got a new piece of glass cut ($14) it was ready to go!

  1. i have done a few pieces using the wax over the paint color and not sure i like the feel of the finish does it take a long time to cure? can i put a harder top coat over the wax?

    • mm American Paint Company says

Hi Gayle – that’s a great question. Although the wax will harden rather quickly, it typically takes 2-3 weeks to completely cure. If you still don’t like the finish the wax gives, then I would recommend lightly sanding off the wax. Then, you can apply the Hard Coat or Top Coat sealer, which will give your piece a shiny, professional looking finish. 2. This is great. I love how the chalk paint looks when it’s applied. I also tried buying it from
