Three years ago, Shizzle Design sisters Cathy and Shelly picked up their first pieces of vintage furniture and unveiled them at Holland, Michigan’s Art in the Park. Their goal was to rescue old pieces before they ended up in the landfill and hopefully make a little money in the process. They were blown away with how well their pieces were received and three weeks later, they had a booth in a local boutique where they still sell their painted furniture today.
With a “can-do” attitude, some wood working skills and the tenacity to find out how to do anything and everything, they continued their journey. Within a year, they started their website and blog Shizzle Design, and were retailing chalk and clay paint, teaching workshops and offering customer support to other Do-It-Yourself-ers around the world. Their painted furniture, along with American Paint Company paint, is sold in 3 boutiques in western Michigan; Caledonia Vintage Market in Caledonia,
Not So Shabby in Holland,
and My Brother’s Keeper in Hudsonville.
Their paint studio, open to the public for retail, is located in Jenison, Michigan, where they ship dozens of orders a day to customers around the U.S. who follow them faithfully.
You can even catch them painting furniture in their ‘one-of-a-kind- Shizzle style’ or Shelly, a known goof ball, might even be caught sending funny selfies to her APC paint distributors!
Shizzle Design has become a leader in the chalk and clay paint world. Their painted furniture has been featured nationwide, numerous times by many different artists and viewed by millions. David Bromstad from HGTV’s Design Star and Color Splash show has even mentioned them on his Facebook page and pinned several of their pieces on his Pinterest Boards. Cathy’s very first piece of chalk and clay painted furniture was purchased by a gal in Long Island, New York. Shelly “accidentally” listed it on Etsy while a local bank was featuring some of their furniture, not thinking anyone out of state would buy it. But of course someone did and away it went! They were hooked!
Born and raised in Byron Center, Michigan, these sisters are about as casual as they come. They are very humbled to have taught their unique style of painting to students from all over the United States and Canada. “It’s so cool to see the excitement when our students finish their first piece. There’s something about creating something new that just brings out the best in everyone.”
Shizzle Design teaches hands on furniture painting workshops and retails the full line of American Paint Company’s all natural chalk and clay based mineral paints in their paint studio and local retail shops. They have taught literally thousands of students in workshops as far away as California and even on campus at Michigan State University. Photos of Shizzle’s work is featured all over the internet, on many different artists websites, and all over Pinterest. They will be featured on the main stage at the upcoming West Michigan Women’s Expo in Grand Rapids, Michigan on March 14-16 at The De Vos Place.
