Heather purchased her paint from APC’s Authorized retailer, Antique Up in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
In this post, Heather shares with us a beautiful piece that only required some love with 2 products. Transforming furniture pieces in your home does not have to be a long, hard process. Let’s see how the color Freedom Road saved the day on this antique.
Choosing the Color Freedom Road

For the color, Heather chose Freedom Road and to seal the project she used Clear Vintage Antiquing Wax.
Applying Freedom Road to the Furniture
We will let Heather tell you about this piece in her own words:
“I purchased a sheet music cabinet from a mentor when I was in graduate school about 10 years ago. She knew I played piano and she had this beautiful antique piece that needed some love.
She offered it to me for $90. Still a poor college student, $90 sounded expensive to me at the time but my mom encouraged me to purchase it because it was so unique and functional for all my piano books.
It became a bonding project with my mother to refinish it but it did not turn out as polished as we would have liked – there were some anomalies in the wood and it was a difficult project.
Fast forward 10 years and I’m living in my new home and ready to give the cabinet a face lift. I decided to try chalk painting the cabinet to avoid the hassle of stripping varnish and to freshen up the piece with a new color!
It’s always the hardest to choose a color for any piece, but once that decision is made the rest is easy. Heather wanted to go more neutral in her decision and choose a neutral grey called Freedom Road.
The thickness of the paint was easy to work with and had no harsh fumes, due to no VOC’s.
This piece only took two coats to make it stand out. The paint dried incredibly quick which allowed Heather to finish this whole piece in the span of 2 days. Medium grit sand paper was used to give the antique details in the corners and overall design. Then she sealed the deal with clear wax which gave this piece a beautiful matte finish!
The Beauty is always in the small details. A little sanding brought out the vintage appeal this piece radiates.
VIOLA! The finished piece.
