Lori Masteroni, owner of Twigs and Twine, in Lakewood, CO shares this circa 1800s trunk that belongs to her friend Diane Williams Gumm for our Monday Makeover!
Diane shared the history of this trunk with us, “The Trunk belonged to my Great grandma Winnie Gertrude Smith Williams. She was born January 27, 1886 and died February 1, 1923. She came from Dunlap Kansas and married my Great Grandpa, John Thomas Williams. My great Grandpa’s death was September 9, 1959. My great grandma acquired this trunk during her lifetime. We got it when my uncle Bob died about 10 years ago.”
Wanting to honor the heritage of this beautiful trunk, they chose to use one of our new American Home Collection colors and it was painted with Vintage Velvet.
The trunk was wet distressed heavily and it was finished with #APC Dark Wax overall.
Fabric was applied to the inside of the trunk in a complementary shade of blue to coordinate with American Paint Company Shinning Seas. Adding a fabric details helps to conceal any flaws in the trunk and it gives a subtle updated look.
In keeping with the period design they painted the original metal to match closely its original colors, using Vintage Velvet and Shinning Seas and Dark Waxed. All embossed metal was painted with Vintage Velvet and second layers of Shining Seas overtop to highlight the raised details and Dark Wax was applied to protect and deepen its patina.
