Youth DIYer Edition: Turn Your Thrift Store Find into a Shabby Chic Statement

Tori is a 15 year-old who was in need of a desk for homework. The desk had to not only fit into the space of her bedroom but match the decor as well.  And there is no better place to find a beautiful piece that fits your budget than second hand stores.  Using American Paint Company products, we’ll show you in this Youth DIYer Edition how to turn your thrift store find into a shabby chic statement following Tori’s lead.

 

Tori and her mom found this charming little desk for a whopping $8 from their local thrift store. They then headed to Fargey’s Decorating Centre for supplies.  With Tori set on a white desk, she took home Uncle Sam, a pure white color, and some Top Coat to seal her project.

It turns out, that it was a bit of a chilly day when Tori started painting. Her mom allowed her to paint it inside as American Paint Company products have no smell or VOC’s, making indoor projects an easy affair.  After wiping down the desk, she applied the first coat and let it dry. She added a second coat for a more even appearance.  She distressed the desk with some sandpaper to give it that shabby chic appeal and sealed her project with Top Coat.  With some new knobs, her desk was complete!

Tori told us how proud she was of the finished piece. She did all the work herself and loves the homey feel it gives her room. She especially loved using our Top Coat and can’t wait to do more at home projects with our easy to use American Paint Company products. We’re excited to see what other statement pieces she’ll come up with!
